<rignes> JUST went dead? :)
<dann> ahhh, thank you mr. ben.
<init2null> rignes: it goes for anything. doctors, lawyers, real estate agents
> everyone back on here?
<mrben> dann: np - it's on their webpage
<rignes> really? I usually trust my dr.
<rignes> And my real estate agent.
<dann> rignes, what just went dead
> hello, hello
<rignes> NEVER truse a lawyer.
<michele> admit it linc you know nothing
<init2null> well, i think there's always a thread of distrust in a some people.
> nope - nothing
<rignes> Nohting went dead.
<rignes> I was just making a comment because someone said their brain just went dead.
<rignes> Just being a smart ass.
<bankrupt> my friend at comUSA tells ppl to go with apple
<Jamesl> Of course they aren't gonna say that
<rignes> Suse? Did he write marches and stuff?
<bankrupt> it is usualy lindows
<michele> good one rignes
<rignes> Really? Never saw lindow. What's it like?
<rignes> michele: Thanks. :)
<dann> no wait, what about linspire
<michele> lindows is windows for linux i think
<rignes> Oops, lindows=linspire
<graeme64> Well Microsoft still offer massive discounts to OEMs to only offer their systems with MS OSes installed - margins on hardware are so small that any discount from MS is significant to OEMs
<michele> that's right ms sued
<bankrupt> ye the got a ton of money for the changed
<rignes> Yeah, that's crazy.
<rignes> I wonder if we are all going to have to call the windows in our houses 'Exterior Ocular Portals' or something to escape the M$ legal departments ire.
<bankrupt> that is b/c of activeX
<rignes> Only an idiot would confuse lindows with windows.
<graeme64> I'm sure a MS lawyer would still claim that 'Exterior Ocular Portals' was confusingly similar to windows!
<rignes> Wait....most users are idiots...:(
<rignes> graeme64: Yeah, probably there.
<rignes> GOOD GOD I hate weather bug.
<graeme64> Strange thing is, they would have o problem finding a court to agree with them :(
<rignes> That and that stupid freakin' calander thingy that they all seem to want to install. Oh and the desktop wallpaper changer too.
<rignes> I don't understand on windows why people need to install weather bug. Why not just make a desktop shortcut to the weather channel?
<rignes> Haha
<rignes> WinXP has builtin time sync.
* mrben uses NetTime to sync clocks with ntp on Windows
<rignes> That' works. ;)
<rignes> Win2k and WinXP automatically sync time to their DC if they are in a domain.
<dann> dann uses ntp on linux and apple to set his time.
<rignes> I use ntp on my linux box to.
<rignes> I just run ntpupdate everynow and again in a cron job.
<mrben> ah - I use ntpd instead
<rignes> I actually saw a novell sever once...just once...
<mrben> sticky wicket - quality english phrase :)
<Jamesl> Skipped the break last week too right? Just mark that part off :)
<slackmac> "I don't understand on windows why people need to install weather bug."...because users are always 'smarter' than their IT guys...after all, they 'installed it at home'(they're _so_ 'good' at computers)...why not at work...;)
<rignes> I'm checking out that site about switching to firefox.
<slackmac> well, at least that the att. of some of the users I support...
<rignes> It's nice, but it says you can tell firefox what e-mail client you prefer. Though i don't see how to in the preferences.
<mrben> rignes: I think there is an extension for it
<rignes> I'll take a look then.
<mrben> http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum21/7850.htm <- tells you how to set firefox to use your default mail app
<bankrupt> ha I like when they give me food
<rignes> Food is good.
<rignes> Beer is good to.
<michele> isnt it always a windows problem??
> yup
<rignes> Or is windows the problem itself?
> yup
<michele> i love ya linc
> i love you too - smooches :-)
<michele> i appreciate you linc
<Jamesl> That's the day all the employees should destroy something on their machines
<michele> what about housewife day there isnt one of them
<michele> hey, dont get me involved
<rignes> Pfft... You know, I actually read an article where a guy mentioned that a linux distro he tried must be "old school" cuz it was a texts install.
<Jamesl> Because it didn't require 100+MB of ram for the installer
<init2null> i always use fedora (don't hit me:), and i find slackware installer a little harder, such as when it asks about the kernel to use.
<init2null> and partitioning is harder
> init: just pick "use the default bzimage", works every single time for me..
<Jamesl> Slack does have some things to get caught up on if you aren't familiar with what you're looking at. But they do highlight the bare.i by default.
<rignes> Slack is super easy to install.
<init2null> you're probably right, but they shouldn't ask in a basic install.
<rignes> And that's coming from me, a recent convert from windows.
<mrben> linc: yeah - but it would be better if it was named 'DEFAULT (Use this if you are unsure)'
> ;-0
> ;-)
<rignes> I don't like the graphical installs. Red hat and Mandrake actually kind of anoy me with their installs.
<Jamesl> Slackware isn't meant to be newbie friendly though, and Patrick doesn't have to do any of that obviously.
<rignes> The thing is, I think it is newbie friendly. Just not ignorant friendly.
<rignes> No tto mean anyone here is ignorant.
<rignes> But once you read a book about it it's easy.
<init2null> i installed windows recently for someone, and i couldn't believe how hard partitioning is with the windows installer!
<rignes> What version of windows?
<rignes> BTW, for anyone intimidated by the slack installer try the slackware book on the site. I think it's pretty good.
<rignes> Though I don't think it's updated for xorg yet though.
<init2null> i think it was ME.
<rignes> What was you?
<mrben> init2null: still using fdisk then?
<rignes> OH!
<mrben> lol
<rignes> I can use fdisk if I have to.
<rignes> I like cfdisk though.
<init2null> yes. that poor woman was desperate. several on the windows forum tried to help her.
<mrben> rignes: nah, I meant MS fdisk to partition for WinME
<bankrupt> knoppix 2
<Jamesl> The fdisk on the windows disk isn't near as crap as the fdisk that some know.
<rignes> Oh wait, your talking about windows. :/
<rignes> heh
<rignes> Oh boy am I dense.
<init2null> i was able to save much of her data with a knoppix disk, though, by burning it to a cd.
<rignes> I don't recall Windows ME install. I think I installed it once and it lasted abou 10 minutes before I was overwitten by something else.
*** Signoff: brian (Quit: If you can't make it good, at least make it look good.)
<mrben> WinME was broken by default. Nasty stuff
<rignes> I nver tried knoppix. Now I see a reason to keep it around though.
<dann> you never tried knoppix? Wow, where have you been? That's like a staple now.
<slackmac> systemrescuecd(.org) is pretty useful too...
<mrben> Knoppix was a revolution - suddenly we can show people what Linux would be like on their machine, without the complication
<rignes> ME was Microshaft releaseing a new OS to get everyone to go on a feeding frenzy to upgrade because the newest version is ALWAYS better.
<init2null> she had written her stuff to a second hd, and the reinstalled windows didn't see the second sh at all.
<rignes> Translation: M$ needed a cash infusion.
<dann> when is MS going to release a live cd?
<dann> LongHorn Live
<init2null> *sh->hd
<rignes> Hah.
<bankrupt> bartpe
<Jamesl> As soon as the systems get a lot more ram
<bankrupt> they have one
<bankrupt> winpe
<bankrupt> stage 1 all the way
<slackmac> WinME = Yugo (nowhere) of OS's...no ?
<bankrupt> well it is win98+
<mrben> slugradio will probably be recording ep6 live at the slug meet tomorrow night
<mrben> ep5 and ep6 should be released on (probably) monday
<dann> two episodes released on Monday?
<mrben> yeah - we're behind
<mrben> ep5 was recorded 2 weeks ago, but never released
