<dann> live, archive, it's all good
<dann> but thanks for the compliment.
<init2null> that was some good research on the gpl.
<Patrick> big crowd tonight
<Patrick> happy 50th show!!
<allan> Thanks
<allan> Hello all

<DaleMN> heh, my prediction is that in 10 years or so that linux will get so popular that microsoft will come out with there own version or a "Linux Compatable" version
<Patrick> you guys been drinking tonight?
<rignes_> Uhh.
> YEAH man!
<allan> Not yet
* DaleMN goes to grab one "good idea"
<rignes_> I saw a sig on a forum some where. "Given enough time and money, Microsoft will eventually invent unix."
<DaleMN> no way, dan quale already did and the internet
<DaleMN> or was it gore?
> gore
<rignes_> Heh
<init2null> because that file system failed for windows 95 already. :)
<dann> Patrick, no not yet, but soon.
<DaleMN> truthfully if linux was more popular, i'd be willing to bet there would be spyware and viruses written for it, theres A-holes everywhere. The only difference is linux users can acknowledge a problem and create a fast and effective solution
<DaleMN> and the various platforms would make doing it more complicated and less effective
<Jamesl> If the distro maintainer has a clue, it won't be in there
<DaleMN> BTW happy first anniversary
<dann> DaleMN, thanks
<Patrick> linc is hammered!
<dann> I really don't see the virus issue being as prevalent on the Linux, BSD, or OS X end. By design, they are more hardened than Windows.
* DaleMN gives linc a PowersGold on the rocks
<allan> Beer is good for you! http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/09/15/2150229
<DaleMN> thats what i was saying it would be more difficult
<DaleMN> but it will happen
> linc isn't hammered - yet.
<rignes_> In my limited understanding, if someone were to write spyware or a virus for linux, it would only effect the currently logged in user, provided he wasn't root at the time.
<DaleMN> theres always a way to exploit software
<Jamesl> Deleting a home directory can still be just as painful
<Patrick> linc has had a few, right?
<init2null> that's why linspire stinks in security -- it runs in root by default.
<dann> That would require someone executing something on your machine without your permission.
<rjbs> rignes_: there's a little more to it, but the fact that normal users are not superusers by default helps quite a lot
* allan waxoff
<dann> And I am trying to recall an app that would allow such a thing to happen whereby a script or something could be slipped in to cause actual damage.
<DaleMN> oh yeah it would be more difficult but why write something thats a pain in the ass to affect a few percent when you can write something easy to screw with 90% of the people
<dann> Yes, there is, but what does that exploit give you. Does the exploit open a hole to remote users, remote application install,
<DaleMN> not to mention most windows users are just that users not operators
<bkuebler> hey dann, send me that honeypot addy. bkuebler@gmail.com

<dann> I think that security by obscurity argument is getting kind of old.
<dann> they said the same thing about OS X
<dann> and apple
<dann> and novell
<dann> and all the other non-MS os's
<rignes_> Nice tune.
<DaleMN> there are apple viruses
<DaleMN> the thing is is linux flavors are like having 20 varieties of apples a disease might affect a few but not all
*** Signoff: Andrew (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
<DaleMN> but if 90% of the people ran linux people would try
<dann> when was the last time you heard about an entire apple shop being taken out of commission because of an email or browser exploit?
<DaleMN> hmmmm, googling
<dann> I'm sure they would and I am sure they are trying now.
<Jamesl> Yes, they would be trying. There are people devoted to doing this crap.

<DaleMN> http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/Print99829.htm theres one apple virus
*** pablo7 (~paul@adsl-215-239-210.aep.bellsouth.net) has joined channel #techshow
<Jamesl> You don't hear about that anyway
<Jamesl> It isn't something you just talk about on the news
<dann> that's stretching, going back to OS 8.1
<pablo7> it's not hard to do everything as root on linux, it's just plain stupid.
<DaleMN> it was a quick google search
<bkuebler> and crickets
<dann> crickets?
<rignes_> Oh, you gotta have fart sound or it's just not worth it.
<DaleMN> lol
<Patrick> everybody loves bodily function jokes :)
<rignes_> for sure

<Patrick> even in the early days the sound quality was better than the linux show
<pablo7> very cool story... it can only get better.
<init2null> that was a really funny segment.
<DaleMN> good clip
<Patrick> we will now ingest charred mammel flesh and large amounts of beer
<DaleMN> MMMmmmm Charred mammal flesh and beer (If there was a Homer Simpson font i'd use it)
<dann> okay, so if you are running X and have it set up so that option A is enabled and then visit a site where that has y exploit this could execute a malicious code
<DaleMN> it's just a point i'm making that you can never think your safe just because your running a certain operating system, the only reason windows is exploited is 1. cause it's easy 2. it's popular and 3. windows users generally know less about there computer then other users of operating systems
<Andrew> has anyone used pearpc ( G3 emulator )?
<DaleMN> but since i've updated my windows viruses twice in 3 days it does get rediculous, good thing i don't use dialup
<DaleMN> BTW tcpdump definately has a purpose
<dann> we have to update our virus ide files up to six times a day.
<DaleMN> thats nuts
<Jamesl> And still get them
<DaleMN> I just wish all the games for windows ran on linux, even if i hardly find the time to play them
<Andrew> i use wine and some games really do work
<DaleMN> supports growing i will say that but it's not there yet
<dann> yes, tcpdump does have a purpose, but generally people don't run tcpdump unless they are monitoring a network or traffic on their machine.
<DaleMN> thats why i run it to check on things behind the scenes
<Jamesl> And then it's unlikely they would fail to patch it
<dann> well, we don't have to update 6 times a day, but updates are coming out all the time and we have been burned too many times.
<pablo7> it takes just one update to open several previously plugged holes.
<DaleMN> i wanted to install linux on my parents/little brothers machine so i could quit going over to fix it but the #1 thing they play is party poker and they don't have a windows version :(
<Andrew> try wine it might work.
<DaleMN> somehow the other day i went to google in windows and spyware was trying to infect the system and i was like WTF?
<rignes_> Also try holding your breath after your wine, it really get you your way.
<DaleMN> that pisses me off, i know it's not google but that means A. someone is scanning IP's to ul or else it happened on a hop along the way
<DaleMN> i'll try it in wine it would make my life easier
<rignes_> Ugh, I hate AOL.
<DaleMN> AOL Roxxors it's so 7332 lol
<Jamesl> 7332??
* rignes_ slap.
<DaleMN> backwords leet
<Jamesl> Uhh, I guess
<DaleMN> well frontwards with numbers NVM it's dumb which is why i put it there
<DaleMN> it somehow fit with AOL both being moronic and all
<DaleMN> you can even see interesting art at www.7332.com
<DaleMN> you guys should video one of your shows
<Jamesl> Trying to count just how many hits I get a day on this microsoft file sharing port
<Patrick> you guys are majorly slurring your words
<DaleMN> yeah they are

<Patrick> My favorite episode is the the linux show sendup back in June
<DaleMN> i dunno does it surpass dans petting zoo story?
<Jamesl> Soon to be raining here as the hurricane moves upward
<Patrick> New Orleans will be under 20 feet of water
<dann> hoagie guy!
<Patrick> same episode
<Patrick> hot linc, very disturbing
