> Hello everybody!
<rignes> Hey!
<Patrick> Nat, chomping on crackers
<vladster> rignes: you will need to add an entry in your fstab
<dann> both thelinuxlink.net and binrev.com are running now
*** Kent (~kent@h-64-105-80-21.chcgilgm.dynamic.covad.net) has joined channel #techshow
<rignes> What sort of entry?
<dann> rear entry
<Patrick> dann, that's really bad man!
<rignes> :/
<Patrick> where's Allan?
> good question!
<vladster> sudo works nicely
<vladster> that is usually a thorny issue with debian
<Patrick> I hear Tim McGraw is coming to town :)
<bkuebler> remind me to stay away that day then.
<bkuebler> :-D
<Patrick> Allan should be concerned :)
<dann> I believe his wife already has tickets
<dann> they sold out too.
<Patrick> yup
<Patrick> the bass player is being stalked
> nobody talkin tonight? everyone listening intently right?
<Patrick> right
<vladster> is this live or what?
> nope - -recorded at lwe yesterday
<vladster> oh an interview
> it's not live, it's memorex - sort of.
<vladster> mammorex
<dann> 19 connections, hope it's holding up for everyone
<init2null> no buffering here yet
> nice and clean over here
> Dann, I can't relay mail - can you fix 4 me please?
<vladster> is there going to be a port for windows so people can dump outlook?
> yes, they are working on a win port for windows as well.
> evolution for windows I mean
<vladster> the group ware feature is a needed thing
<dann> what's your ip?
> here it comes -listen
> 70.20.207.26
<dann> try now
> got it - tnx
<vladster> so then any longhorn ip patent implementation will be void because to gpl'd versions being in place already?
<init2null> it's amazing how quickly X development has exploded. I'm glad XFree86 got forked.
<bkuebler> init2null, did you see /. before?
<vladster> I like the cube
<init2null> huh?
<Patrick> xgl sounds very exciting
<bkuebler> http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/05/02/16/1916250.shtml?tid=104&tid=189&tid=106
<vladster> ati sucks
> I imagin xgl is great if you have a 3d card
<Patrick> could make linux just as purdy as apple
<bkuebler> look at that link I just posted.
<Patrick> nvidia rules
<vladster> WHERE DO I GET IT?
> better than apple because all existing apps will work
<init2null> yup, saw that. exciting, but I hope the glitz is optional!
> vlad - he'll give the link in a minute..
* vladster fangs are dripping
<Patrick> Nat just gave instructions to get it going
<dann> freedesktop.org
<rignes> What did I miss?
<rignes> I just got back, kids.
<Patrick> not much, just some new linux technology to put linux on equal par with apple on the desktop
<vladster> the problem is that the cpu has to work harder
<rignes> So I can have a really cool looking windowmaker? ;)
<vladster> that is why the voodoo 6000 rocked
<bkuebler> is there such thing as cool looking windowmaker?
<rignes> Call me strange, but things like shadows and stuff for my desktop don't excite me.
<rignes> Sure! Mine looks cool.
<bkuebler> we have called you strange for lots of reasons... that is just one more.
<rignes> I've been called worse than strange.
<bkuebler> and that was just today!
<bkuebler> wocka wocka!
<vladster> the packages are different for the novell desktop
<vladster> 9.2 was a disappointment for me
<vladster> tried it and it did not work well for me
> Dann, did you make a slack package for the latest fluxbox perchance?
*** codemonky (~codemonke@82-42-97-63.cable.ubr04.live.blueyonder.co.uk) has joined channel #techshow
<Patrick> I'm compiling the latest qdvdauthor right now
<Patrick> We're looking to have the developer on to talk about it
<rignes> This show live or prerecorded?
<vladster> that means the home directories are also centrally managed as well
<dann> no, I am using the latest fluxbox from 10.1. Not a seperate package I created.
<dann> I compiled fluxbox-dev for ubuntu-ppc.
> which version?
<bkuebler> bkuebler@lolth etc pacman -Q fluxbox-devel
<bkuebler> fluxbox-devel 0.9.12-2
<bkuebler> wheeee!
<vladster> what about the Novell netware services?
<vladster> since the migration of the platform to linux, how are network services implemented
<vladster> as well as the client side
<dann> they have ported most of their services over. Groupwise, nds, and I think iChain were the first. Most of the rest are ready now with the other services filling out between now and the release of 7.0
<vladster> do they also implement the per seat licensing of netware or did they change that policy as well
<dann> I believe what the rep told us was that Novell Enterprise Linux is ready to go supporting all the current services. What is being worked through is the stuff like the migration from netware on netware to netware on top of Linux.
<dann> I believe it is still per-seat licensing. We have an sla which is a bit different because we are K12.

<vladster> if a company were to switch over to linux, with all the services offered in linux and the unix base, what is the advantage of using the Netware services
<Patrick> Allan has entered the building
<allan> Hello all
<rignes> Howdy.
> no way - Allan decided to show!
<vladster> also there is also a lot of web based services that can also be offered as well
<allan> Better late then never
<rignes> The way linc talks it's usually never. But I don't believe him.
<brian> mmmm, beer
<allan> Wow, an oldies show!
<rignes> ;)
<rignes> Anyone know where I can unload a mess of gmail invites?
<vladster> bukoswky
<codemonky> I heard about a site called 'gmail spooler' or something. You'd have to Google, have no URL.
<Patrick> Dan, this is starting to sound like the Conan episode
<brian> start your own site takethesegmailinvitesplease.com
<rignes> Hehe
<vladster> I remember his poem the F**K machine
<rignes> I have someting like 50 of them.
<rignes> Don't know where those came from.

<codemonky> Gmail suddenly gave everyone 50. Big step up from about 6...
<allan> Play a Dann's rant
<dann> I have them over here.
<dann> They're collector's items now
<dann> I'm on sabatical
<rignes> I noticed, I'm unloading my 50 now.
<rignes> Nice sound effects.
> missin the money shot - love that line..
<codemonky> That sandpaper effect made listening to it funny yet.. disturbing.
> it just isn't the same without the sandpaper..
<rignes> You like it rough eh?
> manly man..
<vladster> gets the dead skin off
<bkuebler> You know, I think this is a week of adventure.

<rignes> Helps build up the calouses.
<bkuebler> I finally installed debian and kinda dig it.
> we can hear you tapping away :-)
<bkuebler> I think I will build a slackware file server.
<bkuebler> I have never tried it.
<rignes> slackware, the only way to go. ;)
> once you go slack....
<rignes> You never go back
> :-)
<bkuebler> do I only need disk one for a decent install?
<rignes> of slack?
<bkuebler> ya
> yup
<vladster> I remember the original linux show
<bkuebler> diesel.
<rignes> Disk 1 is everything but kde and gnome I believe.
<bkuebler> I won't need X.
<bkuebler> just a file server.
<rignes> There ya go.
<bkuebler> aight.

<vladster> stil using the same mixer?
<dann> yup
<vladster> you did not hit with a stihl eh
<bkuebler> slack is still kickin it ol' skool with lilo.
<rignes> Yup
<bkuebler> dang yo.
<rignes> Nothin' wrong with lilo.
<bkuebler> lo fi
<vladster> with my hardware, lilo would choke
<codemonky> Any point in using GRUB instead?
<rignes> It just boots the thing.
<codemonky> Ah. That's one point.
<rignes> AFter that what does it matter?
<bkuebler> not a deal breaker. I just like to complain about things.
<vladster> the issue is when you multiboot seven os's
<rignes> Oh we know...
<rignes> How many people do that?
<bkuebler> That's all I found to bitch about so far, so I had to capitalize on it.
<vladster> I am looking as an eighth

<bkuebler> grub /is/ better.
<bkuebler> you can pass multiple boot params at boot time.
<vladster> I heard that
<rignes> It may be, I never used it, I just havn't cared enough to learn it since lilo works for me.
<bkuebler> you even get a cute little shell to work in if stuff stops working.
<rignes> What is that kid saying?
<rignes> hehe
<vladster> I need a menu because od the two windows boots for my wife and kid
> didnt sound like "buck" to me :-)
<rignes> Lilo does a menu.
<brian> yeah
<allan> cat chow cat chow
<vladster> there is a drive limitation side if I am not mistaken
<brian> buck the fraves
<rignes> What sort of drive limitation?
<vladster> there was a bug I ran into from using my 160 gig drives
<vladster> it did not like it
<rignes> I never tried a drive that big.
<vladster> grub did not hang because of it
<rignes> So I can't say. Maybe linc has though.
<bkuebler> grub works better with larger drive.
<bkuebler> s
<codemonky> pfft. I'm stuck with a measly 40gig drive.
<rignes> Or maybe it's fixed, dunno.
<vladster> I have three 160 gig drives
<rignes> you suck
<bkuebler> I just got an 80 GB for free.
<bkuebler> whee!!!
<vladster> that is just in my workstation
<bkuebler> some dude hosed his system, got pissed off at it and gave it to me.
<rignes> Takes room to store all the porn.
<vladster> the server is anthoer issue
<bkuebler> I might be able to give that system to someone if they want it.
<rignes> I take donations ya know.
<rignes> :D
<vladster> I am my own repository
<bkuebler> model name : Pentium II (Deschutes)
<bkuebler> stepping : 2
<bkuebler> cpu MHz : 349.353
<rignes> Heh, a slow one.
<vladster> I mirrored every distro I could find on my server
<bkuebler> If my sister does not need it, one of you guys can have it.
<rignes> Bring it to the next meeting, we'll have a cage match, the last one standing gets it.
<bkuebler> I might keep that one and give away a 667 celeron.
<vladster> cpu P IV
<vladster> 1.9 GHz
<bkuebler> bastard
<rignes> AMD 3000+
<bkuebler> that is the speed of light compared to my machines.
<vladster> socket (ugh) 423
<rignes> 1GB RAM
> dang! I wish I had that kinda hardware that I could give stuff like that away!
<bkuebler> linc man,
<rignes> I ain't givin that away!
<rignes> ;)
<vladster> 512 megs rdram
<bkuebler> you have your own grid of low powered servers.
<rignes> linc: Any issues with lilo on large drives?
<vladster> tried one gig but the case got too warm
> not to my knowledge
<bkuebler> Maybe I will go pick up a 2Ghz+ box.
<bkuebler> you can get them really cheap now.
<bkuebler> I really don't know why I still have a sub 700Mhz celeron.
<rignes> vladster said he had an issue with 160GB drives.
<bkuebler> that is just silly.
<vladster> you can get a bare bones kit for under 200
<bkuebler> exactly.
<vladster> that celeron would make a nice server
> shoot man, I have 2 servers still running here ar 266mhz.
> 280 days uptime btw..
<bkuebler> I already have 2 of them.
<bkuebler> now I just got that 2rd.
<bkuebler> lol
<bkuebler> 2rd.
<bkuebler> I meant third.
<rignes> Oddly enough, my highest powered system runs slackware. When I could get away with much less.
<vladster> I had to shut down my server last month for cleaning
<bkuebler> I have 3 of them.
<vladster> talk about dust
<brian> linc is a great singer
> heh - I was purposefully trying to sing out of key..
<rignes> I think blood is running from my ears listening to him.
<vladster> dann can't fart very long
<brian> well, you're a better singer than I am
<dann> that effect is like two years old too.
<vladster> I can do a 18 second three octave fart
<rignes> How much mexican food does it take to produce one of those?
<brian> my farts clear entire floors of buildings
<vladster> and clear the room in 3 seconds
<rignes> So, the room is clear before you are finished farting?
> yeah! drum demo!
<vladster> seven alarm chili
<bkuebler> ssh keys rawk
<vladster> the room is usually empty when fininshed
<brian> mine smell like the fresh farm manure you smell when driving trhough rural PA in the summer
<rignes> Then the paint crews come in to repaint the walls.
<vladster> grazing eh
<rignes> brian: That was a little to much info...
> we have it on one of the shows as well Dann!
<brian> I need one of those fans the fire dept. uses to clear smoke
<rignes> Oh my...
<allan> Wouldn't you like to know why they recorded that
<mctee155> George Carlin: "A fart that could strip the varnish off a footlocker".
> Allan, yes I would.
> I gotta turn down the show - my dog is gonna go ballistic,
<rignes> Hahahaha
<vladster> kind of reminds me of "It Can't Happen Here
> ooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
<rignes> It kinda hurts the ears in headphones.
> "wouldn't you like to go!"
<vladster> which also included Gale Zappa on lyrics
<allan> Maybe backwards it would sound better
<rignes> AHH!
<rignes> No, don't wip off another one.
> :-) You shoulda sat in the car with him for the last 8 hours :-)
<allan> Thanks for listening
<rignes> Just so long as he didn't wip anything off on you.
<vladster> should of had a pipe from his anus to the intake manifold
> no way man :-) He likes Allan better :-)
